Without academic research in R&D, dentistry’s growth prospects may be stunted. There is no substitute for proper scientific and clinical research for any successful R&D and good academic research and proper development strategies are not only compatible, but together will yield the greatest return on R&D investments and productivity. As dentists, we are aware that a lot of dental institutions generate academic research in the form of dissertations, systematic reviews and short projects. Some of these research projects involve new therapies, bio materials or instruments being used for the first time. At the end of the study period, the natural conclusion of these studies is to publish results in scientific journals.
There is a paucity of data on how these novel ideas are carried to fruition and whether these ideas are launched on a commercial scale at all. At the same time, there is limited knowledge among dental faculty on how to procure and use adequate funding towards R&D expenditure. Luckily with the support of our management and and highly motivated staff several of our staff have acquired research grants and are doing several research products
